“I am incredibly proud of the work that our journalists do day in and day out,” said Global Regina news director Ryan Ellis. “To have that work recognized by the RTDNA is truly an honour.”

Global News in Regina was named a finalist for the Adrienne Clarkson Award – Diversity, for “Love Knows No Gender.”

The story aired on television in May and explored the life of Laura Budd, a transgender woman who spent the first 45 years of her life as Brice Budd.

Another Global Regina television story up for an award is “Inspired by Mario.” The story is one of the finalists for the Hugh Haughland Award, which recognizes creative use of video.

During the television feature, Saskatchewan residents were interviewed about how Super Mario Brothers made an impact in their lives. The game was marking its 30th anniversary in September 2015.

Global Regina is also up for the best newscast as part of the Bert Cannings Award (Medium Market) category for the Evening News on July 8, 2015.

The newscast featured anchor Whitney Stinson live on location in Prince Albert, Sask. providing extensive coverage of the wildfires that ravaged northern Saskatchewan.

The September 19, 2015 episode of Focus Saskatchewan is a finalist for the Trina McQueen Award for Television News Information Program.

The family of Gerald Lord, who died in his home in Holdfast, Sask. after being shot by a Mountie, were interviewed and the episode explores how the police investigate officer-involved shootings.

Global Regina took home three awards at last year’s event – The Bert Cannings Award for best newscast, and the Dave Rogers Award for both long and short feature.

The RTDNA Awards will be handed out in Medicine Hat, Alta. on April 23.
